Red Lion Den Knowle House Guide and FAQ

Thank you for booking your stay in Bristol at the Red Lion Den in Knowle! Here is information that we hope will make your stay an easy one.

I have a large vehicle. Will it fit on your parking space?

Possibly – it depends on how large you mean! One normal SUV and a smaller car can fit on the space as you can see from the photo.

However because the parking access is narrow, you might need to reverse out if you’re unable to use the turning space at the bottom of the lane (there’s a tree there so pull in your wing mirrors!).

If your vehicle is larger then there’s on-street parking on St Martin’s Road and St Martin’s Gardens (below)

How do I use the cooker/hob?

The hob is an induction hob. If you’re unfamiliar with them it might be helpful to first understand how they work.

So, what is an induction hob exactly? Firstly, an induction hob is not the same as a gas burner or electric coil cooker. It uses electromagnetic fields to heat your pans directly, making them faster and safer. Induction hobs create a magnetic field when a ferrous (iron-containing) pot or pan is placed on them. This field generates heat directly in the pot, so the hob itself stays cool. Basically, an induction hob allows you to enjoy instant heat and precise control when cooking.

You should find the user guide in the file we’ve left in the Den but here are the basics:

1. Turn it on – most induction hobs have an on/off power button as well as functions you can select for a specific cooking zone

2. Select heat level – Use the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons to adjust the heat

3. Start cooking – Place your induction-compatible pan on the cooking zone and start cooking

If you do need to clean it, please avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing pads, as they can scratch the surface of your induction hob.

What are the house rules for the den?
0) Arrival directions – please read before travelling

Please confirm you’ve read the arrival directions before setting off. Map pins can sometimes be inaccurate, so the written directions are the most reliable.

1) If anything isn’t right, tell us during your stay

If anything isn’t as expected or you need help, please contact us as soon as possible so we can resolve it. While this is a home (not a hotel), we’ll do our best to make your stay a good one.

2) Communication

Please keep all communication in writing (message/email/booking portal), so we can respond quickly and keep a clear record of anything agreed.

3) Guest numbers & extra bedding

Please ensure the booking reflects the correct number of guests staying overnight. If plans change, let us know as early as possible so we can make up the right beds.
If additional overnight guests arrive on the day without notice, we may need to charge an additional £15 to cover last-minute bedding setup.

4) Bathroom matters (important)
  • High water pressure: please open taps gently.
  • Toilet: please only flush toilet paper. Do not flush wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products or food. The system can block easily. If a call-out is required due to non-flushable items, the cost is £90 and may be charged to the booking.
5) Recycling & bins

Recycling boxes are located at the side of the building, in the green garden box to the right hand side of your front door. Please separate:

  • Cardboard
  • Plastic / tins / tetrapack
  • Paper & glass (no tissues, wipes or toilet paper)
  • Food waste in the brown food bin
6) Smoking

Red Lion Hill Den is non-smoking, including at doors/windows (to prevent smoke drifting inside).
If you smoke, please tell us in advance and we can point you to a suitable spot a short distance away.

7) Noise & neighbours

We have families and elderly neighbours nearby, so please keep noise to a minimum, especially during the evening and early morning.

8) Breakages

Please report any breakages as soon as you can so we can organise replacements for the next guests. For small items (e.g., glasses/mugs), guests often leave the replacement cost in the property — that’s fine. Just message us with what was broken and what was left.

9) Linen & towels

We provide one set of bedding, tea towels, hand towels and bath towels for your stay.
If you’d like extra towels, we charge £2 per towel to cover laundry costs. For longer stays, we can provide additional bedding sets with notice.

10) Longer stays (14+ nights): scheduled cleaning

For longer stays, we carry out a scheduled clean at least every two weeks. We’ll agree the day/time in advance.

On cleaning days, please:

  • Tidy away personal items so our cleaner can access surfaces and floors
  • Ensure there is nothing valuable left out (we recommend keeping valuables with you or stored securely)
  • Ensure the cleaner can access the bedroom/s, bathroom and kitchen

What we’ll do during the clean:

  • Change bed linen
  • Clean the bathroom
  • Clean the kitchen
  • A general clean/tidy of key areas (as agreed)
11) Reuse / low waste

We try to reduce waste. If previous guests leave unopened/non-perishable items (or usable toiletries), we may leave them for future guests.
If you’d prefer we remove these before you arrive, just let us know.

12) Wildlife (and our puppy) and Garden Access

As we have a dog who is incredibly good at jumping over fences, we don’t allow garden access with the den. However there is a nature reserve 5 minutes away on foot so you will have plenty of green stuff to roam in!

So if you notice movement in the garden through your windows, there’s usually no cause for concern. As well as our pup, you may also sometimes see foxes, badgers and squirrels.

13) Check-out

We really appreciate your help with the basics:

  • Please wash up used plates/mugs before leaving
  • Leave used towels in a pile on the bathroom floor; unused towels can be left on the shelf/unit
  • Please return the key to the key safe (or as instructed)
  • If you can, message us when you’re about to leave — if we’re around, we’d love to say goodbye

Thank you for taking the time to read this — and enjoy your stay!
